Leisure activities at the Zeidelhof in Lilienfeld
Hiking in the most densely wooded area of Lower Austria
Three quarters of the region is covered in forest - the district of Lilienfeld is the “green lung” of Lower Austria.
Well-maintained hiking trails offer something for every taste - from cultural tours through 1000 years of history to alpine meadows and forest trails to alpine climbs. Lilienfeld is therefore a wonderful hiking area on the doorstep of the provincial capital, a good hour's drive from Vienna. An area to recharge your batteries and take a deep breath. The magnificent alpine region around the 1248 m high Muckenkogel is accessible by chairlift, while mountain huts and lodges invite you to take a break. The view from the Muckenkogel and the 1313 m high Hinteralpe stretches far and wide - to the north across the Danube valley, to the south far into the Alps.
- On a clear day, the Melk, Herzogenburg, Göttweig and Lilienfeld monasteries can be seen from the monastery point on the 1248 m high Muckenkogel.
- The Klosteralm has been farmed by the monastery since the early Middle Ages, and since 1822 the annual mass has been celebrated on September 8th, the birth of the Virgin Mary.
Theme trails on the Muckenkogel
Mathias Zdarsky panorama trail: circular trail from the top station of the chairlift via Muckenkogel and Schutzhaus Hinteralm - back via Schwarzwald and Klosteralm to the top station.

Waterfall trail: The marked waterfall trail leads from the mountain station to the Klosteralpe and on to the Lilienfelder Hütte. It then leads along romantic forest paths to the Small and Large Waterfalls, also known as the Lindenbrunn Waterfall, until you reach the valley station at the chairlift.
Duration: approx. 2 hours

Zisterzienserstift Lilienfeld
Austria's largest medieval monastery was founded in 1202 by the Babenberg Duke Leopold VI the Glorious. The seal on the document confirming the foundation of Lilienfeld Abbey by Duke Frederick II the Warlike shows the shield, Austria's coat of arms, for the first time. Lilienfeld is thus the birthplace of our national colors red-white-red.
